ARC Days- Academic Responsibility and Choice

We will have ARC Days on a regular basis. This is an opportunity for you to catch up, maintain, or get ahead in your classes.  Students who are in good standing in all of their classes may use these days to participate in social activities of their choice, and students who need the extra time to work on academics will have the time to do so.

    ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY

The first part of the ARC process is Academic Responsibility.   We will always take care of our responsibilities and obligations prior to engaging in the fun things we want to do.

Students will utilize class time to engage in academic tasks that they have been assigned in core academic classes. When those tasks are complete to an acceptable level, the student may engage in appropriate desirable activities as approved by the teacher.

    CHOICE

When all of your academic obligations have been met, you have earned the opportunity to have choices.  Some things you may participate in during this time are:
    -Games
    -Computer (if available)
    -Reading
    -Drawing
    -Talking quietly with a peer
    -Listening to music with headphones
    -Other approved leisure activity

    Binder Requirement
As part of this class, you are required to keep a binder and an assignment notebook or planner.   You will be required to obtain the supplies for the binder as well as a planner or assignment notebook.  If there is a hardship that prevents you from obtaining the necessary materials, please contact me and we will make arrangements.

    Materials for Binder
    • 3 ring view binder (2 ½” or 3”) OR Trapper type binder
    • 10 2 pocket folders with holes to fit in binder rings OR 10 dividers with pockets
    • Loose leaf notebook paper (1 package)
    • Planner or assignment notebook to fit in binder rings or binder pockets
    • Zipper pouch to fit in binder rings
    • Pens and pencils (your choice of what type)
    • Small, basic calculator
    • Ruler

    Planner/Assignment Notebook Requirement
These are the expectations for your planner:
Å      You will write in your assignment notebook daily
Å      Write what you did in class for each day
Å      Writing “nothing” or leaving a day blank is not acceptable, because you did something.  If your teacher gave you a “free day”, then write “free day”.  If you were absent, then write “absent”.
Å      Mark the due date of assignments, tests, and projects
There will be an assignment notebook and binder check every week.   I will stamp your notebook, and when you collect enough stamps, you will be rewarded.  We will determine the number of stamps and the rewards as a class.
You are responsible for keeping up with your notebook.  It should come to school with you daily, and it should attend all of your classes with you.

Academic File Requirement
I will provide you with a place to keep your academic work.  You may choose to place work in the file, and your teachers may place work in your file as well.
You are allowed to work on academic work in this class when we have completed the lesson
If we have choice time and you are missing something in another class, you will be required to complete the missing work first.
You can come in anytime before school and work on your academic work.
If you complete an assignment and it is ready to be turned in, here is what you should do:
Å      Make sure your name is on the assignment
Å      Get a sticky note and write your teachers name on it
Å      Place the assignment in the “turn in” basket or folder

Visual Agenda and Calendar
A visual agenda is displayed on the board to inform students of what the expectations are for the day/week.  In addition, a 6 weeks calendar is posted with major testing dates, holidays, A/B day schedules, bell schedules, and other impending events.

 Visual Bell Schedule
A visual bell schedule is displayed in the hall to remind students of the current A/B Day status and bell schedule status.

Classroom Reward System
To increase desired behaviors in the classroom, I have implemented a system in which students earn “entry slips” into a drawing that is held at the end of each six weeks.  Students may receive a slip for:
Å      Arriving on time and being prepared
Å      Demonstrating on-task behavior
Å      Demonstrating effort
Å      Demonstrating positive behaviors towards peers and staff
Å      Going “above and beyond”
Å      Other observed positive behaviors

Students write their name on the slip and place it in the appropriate basket.   At the end of the six weeks, a class celebration is held.  I choose one of several items I have obtained (through donation or purchase) and draw a name.  The student whose name I draw receives that item.  Students are eligible to win more than one item per drawing.  I base the number of items on what is available.  The very last item, the “grand prize”, is usually something significantly larger than the others.
